THE SCIENCE OF DISASTER MANAGEMENT

Monday 19 October from 12:00 to 13:30 at the Nordic house

Keynote speaker will be Professor Robin Grimes, the Chief Scientific Adviser of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He will speak of the importance of scientific research in responding to disasters, including examples from the Fukushima disaster in Japan, and drawing on his role as scientific adviser to the British government. The FCO’s Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) is responsible for providing advice to the Foreign Secretary, Ministers and officials on science, technology and innovation.

Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson, professor of earth sciences at the University of Iceland, will respond to Grimes’ presentation and talk about the lessons Iceland has learned from preparing for and responding to volcanic eruptions and the role scientists like himself play in that process.

Moderator: Guðrún Pétursdóttir, manager of NORDRESS, a Nordic multi-annual research project (Centre of Excellence) focusing on natural disasters, resilience and societal security.

The seminar will be held in English and is open to all.
